Con l’annuncio solenne del cardinale Dominique Mamberti, è stato eletto al soglio pontificio il cardinale statunitense Robert Francis Prevost, che ha scelto il nome di Papa Leone XIV. La proclamazione è avvenuta al termine del conclave che si è riunito in seguito alla fine del pontificato precedente, segnando un nuovo capitolo per la Chiesa cattolica. Originario di Chicago, 69 anni, religioso agostiniano e fino a oggi prefetto del Dicastero per i Vescovi, Papa Leone XIV è noto per la sua esperienza pastorale in America Latina, in particolare in Perù, dove è stato vescovo di Chiclayo. Considerato un riformatore attento ma equilibrato, ha lavorato negli ultimi anni a stretto contatto con la Curia romana su temi chiave come la nomina dei vescovi e la riorganizzazione delle strutture ecclesiastiche. Con la scelta del nome Leone, richiama una tradizione papale che mancava dal XIX secolo, evocando figure come Leone XIII, noto per l’enciclica Rerum Novarum sui diritti dei lavoratori. L’elezione di un Papa proveniente dagli Stati Uniti rappresenta una svolta significativa nella storia della Chiesa, che riflette il crescente peso delle comunità cattoliche nord e sudamericane.

With the choice of the name Leo, he recalls a papal tradition that has been missing since the 19th century, evoking figures such as Leo XIII, known for the encyclical Rerum Novarum on workers' rights. The election of a Pope from the United States represents a significant turning point in the history of the Church, reflecting the growing weight of the North and South American Catholic communities.

Vladimir Putin e Nicolás Maduro hanno firmato oggi a Mosca un accordo di partenariato strategico tra Russia e Venezuela. L’intesa consolida i rapporti tra i due Paesi, con un focus particolare sulla cooperazione nel settore energetico e petrolifero. Durante l’incontro, i due leader si sono impegnati a promuovere iniziative comuni nell’ambito di OPEC+, del Forum dei Paesi Esportatori di Gas e in altri contesti internazionali legati all’energia. L’accordo prevede anche un rafforzamento della collaborazione tra Russia e Venezuela all’interno delle Nazioni Unite e in altri ambiti multilaterali, compresi quelli relativi al controllo degli armamenti. The agreement strengthens relations between the two countries, with a special focus on cooperation in the energy and oil sectors. During the meeting, the two leaders committed to promoting joint initiatives within OPEC+, the Forum of Gas Exporting Countries and other international energy-related frameworks. The agreement also provides for strengthening cooperation between Russia and Venezuela within the United Nations and in other multilateral frameworks, including those related to arms control. The two countries also reaffirmed their opposition to unilateral sanctions.

Il presidente siriano Ahmed al Sharaa è atteso oggi all’Eliseo per un incontro ufficiale con Emmanuel Macron, segnando la prima visita europea del leader siriano da quando ha preso il potere dopo la caduta di Bashar al Assad, l’8 dicembre scorso. Al centro del colloquio, la ricostruzione della Siria, la cooperazione economica nel settore dell’aviazione e le questioni legate alla sicurezza regionale. Secondo fonti ufficiali siriane, l’agenda comprenderà anche gli attacchi israeliani nel Paese, i rapporti con i vicini, in particolare il Libano, e il ripristino dell'autorità di Damasco sulla scena internazionale. Macron ribadirà il sostegno della Francia a una Siria libera e stabile, auspicando inclusività e rispetto per tutte le componenti sociali. Il vertice rappresenta un passo rilevante verso la normalizzazione diplomatica tra la Siria post-Assad e l’Europa, con Parigi che si propone come interlocutore per favorire pace e ricostruzione

According to official Syrian sources, the agenda will also include Israeli attacks in the country, relations with neighbours, especially Lebanon, and the restoration of Damascus' authority on the international stage. Macron will reiterate France's support for a free and stable Syria, calling for inclusiveness and respect for all social components. The summit represents a significant step towards diplomatic normalization between post-Assad Syria and Europe, with Paris proposing itself as an interlocutor to promote peace and reconstruction.

Il gruppo yemenita Houthi ha dichiarato che il recente accordo di cessate il fuoco con gli Stati Uniti non implica alcuna tregua verso Israele, lasciando aperta la possibilità di nuovi attacchi in mare contro obiettivi israeliani o loro alleati. Il presidente Trump ha annunciato lo stop ai bombardamenti contro gli Houthi, a seguito di un’intesa mediata dall’Oman che prevede la cessazione degli attacchi alle navi statunitensi. Nessun attacco è stato registrato nel Mar Rosso da gennaio. Mohammed Abdulsalam, capo negoziatore Houthi, ha ribadito che l’intesa esclude Israele, sottolineando che il gruppo si riserva il diritto all'autodifesa e continuerà la sua offensiva se provocato. Intanto, l’esercito israeliano ha colpito per due giorni consecutivi l’aeroporto di Sana'a, aumentando ulteriormente la tensione. Gli attivisti per i diritti umani segnalano gravi rischi per i civili. L’accordo segna una de-escalation temporanea tra Houthi e Stati Uniti, ma il conflitto regionale resta acceso e potrebbe riaccendersi in qualsiasi momento.

Yemen's Houthi group has said that the recent ceasefire agreement with the United States does not imply any respite for Israel, leaving open the possibility of new attacks at sea against Israeli targets or their allies. President Trump announced a halt to bombing against the Houthis, following an agreement brokered by Oman that includes a halt to attacks on US ships. No attacks have been recorded in the Red Sea since January. Mohammed Abdulsalam, the Houthi's chief negotiator, reiterated that the agreement excludes Israel, stressing that the group reserves the right to self-defense and will continue its offensive if provoked. Meanwhile, the Israeli army has struck Sana'a airport for two days in a row, further increasing tensions. Human rights activists warn of serious risks for civilians. The agreement marks a temporary de-escalation between the Houthis and the United States, but the regional conflict remains heated and could reignite at any time.

Alle 16:30 di oggi si aprirà ufficialmente il Conclave per l’elezione del 267° Papa della Chiesa cattolica. I 133 cardinali elettori si riuniranno nella Cappella Sistina per una prima votazione. La giornata odierna prevede un’unica fumata, mentre da domani le fumate saranno due al giorno: una al mattino e una al pomeriggio. La fumata nera indicherà l’assenza di un esito, quella bianca l’elezione del nuovo Pontefice. Ciascun cardinale riceverà una scheda con la formula latina “Eligo in Summum Pontificem”, su cui scriverà il nome dell’eletto. Dopo aver pronunciato la formula di giuramento, deporrà la scheda nell’urna. Se il numero delle schede non coinciderà con quello degli elettori, saranno tutte bruciate e si procederà a un nuovo scrutinio. In caso contrario, si procederà con lo spoglio e il conteggio. Le schede saranno poi bruciate in una delle due stufe, una per la combustione e una per la produzione del fumo colorato. Per l’elezione è necessaria una maggioranza di due terzi: in questo Conclave, quindi, almeno 89 voti. Se dopo diversi scrutini non si raggiungerà un’intesa, sono previste pause per preghiera e riflessione. Nelle fasi finali, se ancora non emergerà un nome, si voterà tra i due candidati più votati, che però non potranno partecipare al voto.

At 4:30 p.m. today, the Conclave for the election of the 267th Pope of the Catholic Church will officially open. The 133 cardinal electors will gather in the Sistine Chapel for a first vote. Today there will be only one smoke, while starting tomorrow there will be two smokes per day: one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The black smoke will indicate the absence of an outcome, the white smoke the election of the new Pontiff. Each cardinal will receive a ballot paper with the Latin formula “Eligo in Summum Pontificem”, on which he will write the name of the elected. After pronouncing the oath formula, he will place the ballot paper in the ballot box. If the number of ballots does not match the number of electors, they will all be burned and a new count will be held. Otherwise, the votes will be counted and counted. The ballots will then be burned in one of two stoves, one for combustion and one for producing colored smoke. A two-thirds majority is needed for the election: in this Conclave, therefore, at least 89 votes. If after several ballots an agreement is not reached, pauses for prayer and reflection are planned. In the final stages, if a name still does not emerge, a vote will be held between the two most voted candidates, who however will not be able to participate in the vote.
